Day 6 - Dunedin Wildlife

Leaving Te Anau today we drove around 3.5 hours to Dunedin. The drive was nice, not just because of the scenery but also because we were the only car on the road for most of the drive, and I just wished I could have done this in my ute, all those turns make for a very interesting drive.

In Dunedin we checked in and then had a bit of a walk around and grabbed a bite to eat before going on to the Elm Peninsula Encounters Tour. We were in a fairly small group and our guides pointed out the different bird species on our way to the albatross colony and later on Papanui beach, where we would see fur seals, sea lions and various species of penguin up close. The weather was pretty good, it was windy but didn't rain and we even had some sunny breaks.

Yellow eyed penguin on the path to the beach, making for a great photo opportunity.

This little guy made his way back from the water to the hills.

After only seeing a sea lion sleeping on the beach, we made it just in time to catch a male chasing after a female sea lion into the water. They can move pretty fast even on land if they want to!
